What Makes a Complete Fire Alarm System?

Fire alarms are a life safety system first, a property protection system second, and lastly a business continuity and risk mitigation strategy.  In most built environments, fire alarm systems are required by code. The basis for the extent of the required fire alarm systems comes from either the NFPA Life Safety Code NFPA 101, or from the International Code Council's International Fire Code. The majority of installation protocols are prescribed in NFPA 70 - The National Electrical Code, and NFPA 72 - The National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code.

As a life safety system a "fire alarm" may contain
more than just the basic fire detectors such as: smoke detectors, flame detectors, sprinkler activation detectors, other suppression systems activation monitoring and to alert and guide occupants; mass notification indicators.  A fire alarm can always exceed the minimum requirements called for in NFPA 101, and often prudence demands exceeding the minimums. Today, fire alarm systems are being used for the management of all types of emergencies such as earthquakes, natural disasters, and violent criminal activities in addition to fire detection and notification.  "Mass notification" systems allow for multiple pre-recorded voice message alerts and the microphone based voice paging instructions that can be given directly by emergency responders on site.

Fire alarm systems can also monitor for CO gas, natural gas (methane), propane gas and other types of flamable and toxic gases; all of which are serious life safety threats.  A more complete fire alarm system may also have property protection monitoring including: heat detection, flood detection, and temperature detection to name a few.  Fire alarm systems may also include environmental controls through building management systems. A special hazards analysis will provide an excellent basis for the engineering of a more complete system and should be conducted on a regular basis as the building environments change over time, especially in the manufacturing sector.

What are some unusual fire alarm system features that you know of?
